Summer Camp

Scouts in Troop 58 attend summer camp each year at Camp Powhatan, a camping reservation located in Hiwassee, Pulaski County, Va. The camp includes campsites located in the forest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, hiking trails, a large lake, dining hall, parade field, volleyball court, shooting ranges, trading post, and more. Scouts will spend a week at camp learning all sorts of exciting skills, making new friends, and having fun.

Summer Camp activities include:

  • Merit badge classes in the fields of water, nature, Scoutcraft, handicraft, Eagle-required badges, and more
  • Brownsea Island, a special program for first-year Scouts working towards First Class rank
  • Open waterfront (swimming and boating), handicraft, and target shooting
  • Campfire ceremonies
  • Special events (such as reptile/creature show, international concert, camp staff interest meeting, etc.)
  • Order of the Arrow social
  • Trading post selling T-shirts, souvenirs, camping supplies, Scouting literature, snacks, and more
  • Adult-specific activities such as the Reservation tour, training, and Scoutmaster lounge

Outdoor Activities

In Scouting, the classroom is the great outdoors. Throughout the year, Troop 58 will do weekend camping at either the Settlers Museum in Southwest Virginia or Raven Cliff. These functions will allow Scouts to appreciate nature while learning emergency skills in a group setting (the Patrol Method). In addition to camping, our troop also participates in hiking trips throughout the various hiking trails of Southwest Virginia.

Community Service & Citizenship

A Scout promises to help other people at all times and to do a good turn daily. Our troop partners with local organizations to give better to the community. Learn more about how we make a difference in the community. In addition to service, our troop also takes field trips to local landmarks including historical areas and museums, and they participate in Scout Sunday by attending a special church service at Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Merit Badges

In the Scout program, Scouts are encouraged to find out what they want to do in life. The merit badge program offers over 135 options in a variety of subjects including trades, professions, sciences, arts & crafts, business & industry, science, sports, and personal development.

See the requirements for each merit badge on the BSA website.
